Mesothelioma Symptoms
In 99% of all cases, mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos. In the early stages mesothelioma cancer symptoms are non-specific and often overlooked resulting in a delayed mesothelioma diagnosis. Some show no symptoms at all until the latter stages of the disease.
Early Mesothelioma Symptoms

Pleural mesothelioma affects the lungs, the cavity of the lungs, and the protective lining around the lungs. Symptoms occur when there is a buildup of fluid between the chest cavity and the lung lining. They include
- A persistent cough
- Shortness of breath
- Coughing up blood
- Trouble breathing
- Trouble swallowing
- Fever
- Rasping
Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of mesothelioma seen.
Peritoneal Mesothelioma Cancer Symptoms
- A dry raspy cough that is persistent with little phlegm
- Difficulty swallowing
- Coughing up blood
- Night Sweats
- Fever
- Fatigue
- Unexplained weight loss
- Shortness of breath even at rest
- Lumps under the skin of your chest
- Pain in the chest or rib area that causes persistent pain
- Pain breathing
These symptoms often appear after the peritoneal membrane thickens, which results in the accumulation of fluid between the membrane levels.
Pericardial Mesothelioma Cancer Symptoms
While this form of mesothelioma makes up only 5% of all cases. It occurs when the pericardial membrane thickens and fluid builds up. Symptoms include:
- Chest pain
- Heart palpitations
- Irregular heartbeat
- Difficulty breathing even at rest
- Overall fatigue
- Fever
- Night sweats
